361 Days to Race Day

On Saturday, Jon and I went to Hayward to watch the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race. For those of you who don't know the history behind the race, here is a clip from the website (www.birkie.com) and Jon's constructive edits:

The 51K American Birkebeiner is the biggest cross country ski race outside of the olympic games. The American Birkebeiner was founded in 1973 to honor and re-create a historic Norwegian event when in 1206, two warrior soldiers, called "Birkebeiners" because of the birch-bark leggings they wore, skied infant Prince Haakon (Hō-ken) to safety during the Norwegian civil war. Prince Haakon subsequently became King of Norway, and the Birkebeiner soldiers became a Norwegian symbol of courage, perseverance and character in the face of adversity.

Over the years many thousands of people, both elite and "Citizen Skiers," have enjoyed the thrill of personal triumph crossing the finish line of the Birkie and earning their prestigious award medallions.

We were both semi-inspired to ski next year, so we'll see how that idea turns out. It would be fun to do as a family someday - at least the 23K sounds fun, I'm still not sure about the 51K :-)

California Girl

So these pictures are a few weeks old, but I had such a hard time narrowing down my favorites. We had a blast visiting Allison and enjoying the warm, beautiful weather.

We spent a lot of time on walks and at the park... Greta especially loved the swings

On Friday we drove to Santa Barbara and arrived just in time to see the beach at sunset. Greta wasn't a big fan of the sand at first, but eventually she didn't mind walking around.

Our little thinker...

So big...

Greta loved playing with her auntie Allison...

and loves getting kisses from mommy

Snowy Day

Just when I think I can't take another single day of winter, we get a nice little snow storm that takes your breath away. This picture doesn't really do it justice, but our backyard is really beautiful in the winter (especially when viewed from the cozy couch by the fire :-)
